Garfield Movie Review - A Fun and Witty Comedy
Garfield, the lovable and lazy orange tabby cat, finally made his big screen debut in the 2004 film adaptation. As a longtime fan of the comic strip, I was thrilled to see this furry feline come to life through CGI animation. The film managed to bring the humor and wit of the comic strip to the big screen, while also introducing a few new characters and storylines.
Plot and Characters
The film follows Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray) as he struggles with his mundane life of sleeping, eating and tormenting his owner, Jon Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer). However, when Jon brings home a new dog, Odie, Garfield's world is turned upside down. Feeling threatened by Odie's presence, Garfield sets off on a mission to get rid of him. Along the way, he encounters a group of alley cats and begins to realize the importance of friendship and acceptance.
The characters are true to their comic strip counterparts, with Garfield's sarcastic wit and love for lasagna stealing the show. The addition of Odie provides some heartwarming moments, and the alley cats provide a good dose of humor. Jennifer Love Hewitt also appears as Liz Wilson, the veterinarian that Jon has a crush on.
Cinematography and Music
The use of CGI animation allows Garfield to be as expressive as he is in the comic strip, with exaggerated facial expressions and body movements. The film also features some impressive sequences, such as a chase scene through the city streets. The soundtrack is upbeat and fun, with songs by Smash Mouth and James Gang.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, Garfield is a fun and lighthearted comedy that stays true to the source material. Bill Murray is the perfect choice to voice Garfield, and the rest of the cast does a great job as well. While some may criticize the film for being too simplistic, it provides a good dose of laughs and a heartwarming message about friendship and acceptance. Plus, who can resist the charm of that lazy orange cat?
